Vedic Astrology — 12 Houses & Rashis

In Vedic astrology, the birth chart (Kundali) divides the sky into 12 houses called Bhavas. Each house is governed by one of the 12 Rashis and their planetary lords, determining aspects of life from personality and wealth to career and liberation. Tap any house below to explore.

What is a Kundali?

A Kundali is a Vedic birth chart that maps the sky into 12 houses (Bhavas) at the exact moment and location of birth. The position of 9 Grahas across these houses and 12 Rashis reveals personality traits, karmic patterns, and life events — forming the foundation of Jyotish Shastra.

Planetary Strength — Exaltation, Debilitation & Mool Trikon

In Vedic astrology, a planet's strength depends on which Rashi (sign) it occupies. Three key dignity states determine how powerfully a Graha can express its qualities:

Exaltation (Uchcha / उच्च)

A planet is exalted when placed in the sign where it expresses its highest, most auspicious qualities. At a specific degree within that sign, it reaches peak exaltation. An exalted planet gives strong, positive results — like Sun exalted in Aries at 10° brings leadership, confidence, and authority.

Debilitation (Neecha / नीच)

Debilitation is the opposite of exaltation — the planet is in the sign where it is weakest and struggles to express its nature. It always falls in the sign exactly opposite (180°) to the exaltation sign. A debilitated planet may create challenges in its significations — like Sun debilitated in Libra at 10° can weaken self-confidence and authority. However, Neecha Bhanga (cancellation of debilitation) through other planetary combinations can reverse or mitigate the effects.

Mool Trikon (मूल त्रिकोण)

Mool Trikon ('root trine') is a specific degree range within one of a planet's own signs where it performs most naturally and effectively — stronger than own sign but slightly less intense than exaltation. Think of it as the planet's 'office' — not a peak state, but its most productive, comfortable zone. For example, Sun's Mool Trikon is Leo 0°–20°, where it governs with steady authority rather than the fiery intensity of exalted Aries.

Understanding Drishti (Planetary Aspects)

Drishti ('sight' or 'glance') is how planets influence houses beyond their own position. A planet doesn't just affect the house it sits in — it casts its gaze across the chart, activating or challenging the significations of distant houses.

7th House Aspect (Universal)

Every planet aspects the house directly opposite to it — the 7th house from its position. This is the foundation of all Drishti.

Special Aspects (Vishesh Drishti)

  • Mars aspects the 4th and 8th houses — forward aggression and deep penetration.
  • Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th houses — the trine houses of dharma and fortune.
  • Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th houses — effort and karma.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kundali in Vedic astrology?
A Kundali (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact time and place of birth, divided into 12 houses called Bhavas. Each house is occupied by one of the 12 Rashis (zodiac signs), and the planetary positions within these houses determine various aspects of a person's life.
What are the 12 houses (Bhavas) in a Kundali?
The 12 Bhavas are: 1st Lagna (Self), 2nd Dhana (Wealth), 3rd Sahaj (Siblings), 4th Sukh (Happiness), 5th Putra (Children), 6th Ari (Enemies), 7th Yuvati (Spouse), 8th Mrityu (Transformation), 9th Dharma (Fortune), 10th Karma (Career), 11th Labha (Gains), 12th Vyaya (Liberation).
What is Drishti (planetary aspect) in Vedic astrology?
Drishti means 'sight' — every planet aspects the 7th house from its position. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th houses, Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th, and Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. These special aspects influence the houses they fall on.
What does planetary exaltation and debilitation mean?
Exaltation (Uchcha) is when a planet is at its strongest in a specific sign — for example, Sun is exalted in Aries at 10°. Debilitation (Neecha) is when a planet is weakest, always in the sign opposite to its exaltation — Sun is debilitated in Libra at 10°.
