Common questions
Panchang, in plain terms.
What is a Panchang?
A Panchang is the Hindu calendar and almanac that tracks five key elements of Vedic time — Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, Karana, and Vaar (weekday). It guides daily rituals, auspicious timings, and spiritual practice based on precise astronomical positions of the Sun and Moon.
What is Tithi?
Tithi is the lunar day — the angular distance between the Sun and Moon in 12-degree increments. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, split into two fortnights: the waxing Shukla Paksha and the waning Krishna Paksha. Each tithi governs specific rituals, auspicious activities, and deity worship.
What is Nakshatra?
Nakshatra is the lunar mansion — one of 27 fixed star-sectors the Moon traverses during its monthly cycle. Each nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac and has a presiding deity, symbol, and characteristics that influence Vedic astrology, muhurta selection, and naming ceremonies.
What is Rahu Kaal and should I avoid it?
Rahu Kaal is an inauspicious ~90-minute window each day, traditionally avoided for starting new ventures, travel, or important rituals. It repeats weekly on a fixed schedule and depends on local sunrise and sunset. Ongoing activities are generally unaffected; the caution applies mainly to initiations.
What is Choghadiya?
Choghadiya divides the day and night into eight ~90-minute segments labelled Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Rog, Kaal, and Udveg. Amrit, Shubh, Labh, and Char are considered auspicious for most activities; Rog, Kaal, and Udveg are generally avoided for new beginnings.
