Significance
Honours Goddess Saraswati on Magha Shukla Panchami, celebrating knowledge, arts, and the onset of spring.
Vasant Panchami heralds the arrival of spring (Vasant ritu) and is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and the arts. It falls on Panchami tithi (the fifth day) of Magha Shukla Paksha. The colour yellow dominates the celebration — representing the mustard fields in bloom — and devotees wear yellow garments, prepare yellow sweets, and decorate Saraswati idols with yellow flowers.
The day holds special importance for students, scholars, musicians, and artists, who place their books, instruments, and tools before the goddess and seek her blessings. In many parts of North India, young children are initiated into learning (Akshar Abhyasam or Vidyarambham) on this day, writing their first letters under a priest's guidance. Educational institutions and libraries conduct Saraswati Puja with great devotion.
From a panchang perspective, the Panchami tithi of Magha Shukla Paksha must be active during the Purvaahna kala (forenoon) for the puja to be performed at the correct time. If the tithi spans two days, the day on which it prevails during the morning hours is chosen. Nakshatra and yoga considerations further refine the muhurat for Saraswati Puja.
Vasant Panchami also marks the beginning of preparations for Holi, which arrives 40 days later. In Vrindavan and Mathura, the festival inaugurates the Holi season with flower-laden celebrations in temples of Krishna and Radha.
