Significance

Married women's nirjala fast on Kartik Krishna Chaturthi for their husband's longevity, broken at moonrise.

Karwa Chauth is a one-day fast observed by married Hindu women for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. It falls on Chaturthi tithi (fourth day) of Kartik Krishna Paksha, roughly nine days before Diwali. The name derives from 'karwa' (an earthen pot used in the puja) and 'chauth' (the fourth day).

The fast is nirjala — without food or water from sunrise until moonrise. Women dress in bridal finery (often red or pink), apply mehndi (henna), and gather in groups to listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (narrative of Queen Veervati). The fast is broken only after sighting the moon through a sieve (chalni), then looking at the husband's face through the same sieve, and receiving water from his hands. The ritual beautifully intertwines astronomical observation (moonrise timing) with devotional practice.

Panchang consultation is critical because the moonrise time varies significantly by city and even by neighbourhood latitude. The Chaturthi tithi must prevail during the evening for the fast to be valid. If Chaturthi ends before moonrise, different traditions handle it differently — some consider the fast incomplete, while others allow it if the tithi was present at sunrise. Accurate moonrise timings for one's specific location make panchang apps especially valuable on this day.

While Karwa Chauth is predominantly a North Indian festival — strongest in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh — its observance has spread across urban India. In recent years, many couples observe the fast mutually, reflecting evolving interpretations of the tradition.
