Significance
The imperishable day on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya — any meritorious act performed yields eternal results.
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the Tritiya (third day) of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha and is regarded as one of the most inherently auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. The word 'akshaya' means imperishable — any meritorious act, donation, or investment made on this day is believed to yield results that never diminish. It is a Sade-Sati-free, self-auspicious (swayam siddha) muhurat requiring no further panchang alignment.
The day is associated with multiple Puranic events: the beginning of Treta Yuga, the appearance of Parashurama (sixth avatara of Vishnu), the day Sudama visited Krishna and received infinite wealth, and the day Vyasa and Ganesha began writing the Mahabharata. This layering of mythological significance makes Akshaya Tritiya uniquely powerful across Vaishnavite, Shaivite, and Jain traditions.
Despite being a swayam siddha muhurat, panchang consultation is still valuable. The Tritiya tithi should ideally prevail during the Purvaahna kala (forenoon) for the best results. If combined with Rohini nakshatra — as sometimes happens — the day is considered exceptionally auspicious. Devotees perform daan (charity) of water, food, umbrellas, and fans (given the summer heat), worship Lakshmi-Narayana, and begin new ventures.
In contemporary practice, Akshaya Tritiya has become strongly associated with purchasing gold and initiating investments. While the commercial aspect is prominent, the Vedic emphasis remains on daan and dharmic action — the true 'imperishable' wealth is spiritual merit accumulated through selfless giving.
